Abu Dhabi Public Bus Fare Payment
To ensure a seamless travel experience for residents, visitors, and tourists in Abu Dhabi, the Department of Transport (DoT) has simplified public transportation payments.
They introduced the Hafilat card in Abu Dhabi in 2015 so that they could replace cash transactions. The card is available in two types: Contactless Smart Ticket and Personalised Hafilat Card.
Moreover, the good news for travellers is that if they have this card, they will receive Hafilat passes, such as the T-Purse, Weekly, and Monthly Pass, for unlimited rides.
Additionally, there are 4 types of Hafilat cards in Abu Dhabi:
1: Temporary use Hafilat Cards
As its name suggests, this Hafilat Card is available for a limited time, meaning it is valid for only 14 days. If you own this card, you can simply recharge it for just AED 150.
You can use this card to easily travel to various places in the emirate on Local Bus Services, along with Regional Bus Services.
However, if you only want to travel on the Local Bus, you can purchase a weekly pass from Ticket Office Machines (TOMs) for just AED 30 per week, with no further charges.
2: Personal and Permanent use Hafilat Cards
The personal and permanent use Hafilat Cards is valid up to five years. You can recharge your card with just AED 150 and easily travel on Local Bus Services as well as Regional Bus Services.
To get a Personal Hafilat Card, you must show your identification card at a ticket office located at the bus station. Ticket Office Machines (TOMs) do not issue Personal cards.
On the other hand, if you want a Permanent Hafilat Card, you can purchase it directly from Ticket Office Machines (TOMs), and you do not need to provide identification details.
3: Special Needs and Senior Citizen Hafilat Cards
The special needs and senior citizen Hafilat card annual pass can be bought for just AED 500. It is specifically for senior citizens and individuals with special needs.
The pass will allow them to travel on both Local Bus Services and Regional Bus Services. Senior citizens in Abu Dhabi can get the Senior Citizen Hafilat Card from the Ticket Office at the station by presenting their identification documents.
4: Student Hafilat Cards
The student Hafilat card annual pass is available to students to make their journeys easier. Students can get this annual pass for AED 500.
Students can use the Student Hafilat Card to travel seamlessly on Local Bus Services and Regional Bus Services. To get the card, students must visit the Ticket Office at the station with their identification documents.
Hafilat Card Recharge Machines
The following are the two types of recharge machines that people can use to recharge or fill their cards:
1: Ticket Office Machines (TOMs)
The ticket office machines are used for providing Temporary Use Hafilat Cards as well as Permanent Use Hafilat Cards.
People can use the TOMS for recharging their cards and also add bus passes to get an Hafilat card. For payment, TOMS accepts banknotes and coins, both of which can be used to make purchases.
It is worth mentioning that you can find TOMs at all major bus stations, airports, and shopping centres in Abu Dhabi.
2: Swift Recharge Machines (SRMs)
The Swift Recharge Machines are also used to provide people with Hafilat Cards. For payment, only selected banknotes are accepted, and the machine does not provide change if you pay with extra banknotes.
You can find the SRMs inside all air-conditioned bus shuttles and shopping centres.
